Agents — Customize, Swap Models, and Earn Credits

By Support·August 26, 2026

Agents are the creative minds behind every stage of your story. Learn how to tweak their instructions, swap in different text models, set defaults for every new idea, and even resell your best agents to other creators for credits.

We keep updating ScriptFrame with better text models

New, stronger and more efficient models are added regularly. When a better model appears, it shows up in the agent editor’s model picker automatically — you can switch any of your agents to it without recreating anything. Check back on the Agents page and in Settings; we’ll continue to expand the list as providers release improvements.

1. What agents are

Every story you generate runs through a pipeline of specialized agents. Each agent is a reusable set of instructions paired with a text model. The platform ships with built-in agents that work well for most stories, but you can also create your own, fine-tune them for your voice or genre, and choose them whenever you create a story.

  • You own what you create. Your agents live in My Agents and are visible only to you until you publish them.
  • You can use what others publish. The Marketplace lists agents other creators have shared. Buying one adds it to your collection instantly.
  • They are interchangeable. Any agent assigned to a stage replaces the built-in behavior for that stage only — the rest of the pipeline stays the same.

You will find everything under Agents in the main navigation. See also Story Generation for where agents plug into the creation flow, and Credits and Consumption for how costs are calculated.

2. The 4 stages you can customize

A story is built in four steps. Each step has its own agent:

Stage Role What it shapes
Concept ArchitectBig pictureTitle, genre, tone, synopsis, twists, cast and narrative arc
Story ScriptwriterMoment by momentSecond-by-second scenes, vivid descriptions, dialogue, sounds, backgrounds and camera angles
Effects DirectorCinematic feelCamera moves, pacing and atmosphere — used where tension calls for it
Asset DiscoveryWorld buildingProps, locations and character states that actually appear in the story

You can customize any combination — for example, keep the built-in Concept Architect but use your own Scriptwriter for sharper dialogue.

3. Modifying an agent — prompt and model

Open Agents → My Agents → Create Agent or click Edit on an existing one. Each agent has:

Name and description

How it appears to you and, if published, to buyers in the marketplace. Be specific — buyers choose by name and description.

Stage

Which pipeline step it belongs to. An agent built for Concept will not appear as an option for Effects.

Instructions (prompt)

Your creative direction — tone, structure, constraints, examples. This is private. Buyers can use the agent but never see the instructions. Every time you save, the agent’s version bumps so buyers know which configuration they are on.

Model

The text model that executes the instructions. Use the searchable picker to choose from all ready-to-use models. The picker shows the price per unit so you can compare.

Cloning: You can clone the built-in agent or any agent you own to start from a working baseline, then tweak the instructions or swap the model. Look for Clone on the Agents page.

  • Edits are versioned — previous versions are kept so you can review what changed.
  • Buyers automatically use the snapshot that was current when they purchased; updating your agent does not retroactively change their copy’s instructions, but the stage it applies to always reflects your latest stage setting.
  • Archiving hides an agent from all selectors without deleting it.

4. Swapping defaults — Settings vs. per-idea

You have two levels of control. They work together so you set a preference once but can still make exceptions.

Global defaults

Path: Settings → Default AI Agents

Choose one agent per stage — or leave it at Default (built-in). This choice is saved to your profile and pre-filled the next time you create an idea. Save with Save Preferences. If an agent is deleted or archived, the setting reverts to built-in automatically.

Per-idea override

Path: Dashboard → New Idea → Custom AI Agents

Expand Custom AI Agents when creating a new idea. You will see the same four selectors, pre-filled from your global defaults. Change only the stages you want to override — untouched stages continue to follow your Settings. Only the stages you explicitly change are saved with that idea; regenerating later respects the same logic.

If you do not own any custom agents yet, the selectors show Default (built-in) and link to the Agents marketplace where you can browse or create one.

Tip: Set your most-used voice in Settings, then use the per-idea override for experiments — for example, keep your favorite Concept Architect globally but try a new Scriptwriter just for a sci-fi idea without affecting other stories.

5. Selecting a different model — quality vs. cost

The model you pick directly affects both the creative quality and the credit cost. Stronger models cost more per generation but often produce richer structure, tighter dialogue or more coherent worlds. Lighter models are cheaper and faster — great for drafts and quick iterations.

  • Pricing is shown in the picker. Each model lists its price per unit (for example, per million tokens) so you can compare before you choose.
  • Cost scales with work done. Longer ideas, more chapters and longer generated text use more tokens. The Dashboard’s credit chart breaks spending down by category so you can spot which stage or model is most expensive.
  • You can mix and match. Use a strong model for the Concept and Scriptwriter stages where writing matters most, and a lighter one for Asset Discovery where the task is more enumerative — this balances quality and cost.

You can change the model on any agent at any time via Edit. The next generation using that agent will use the new model. No need to recreate the agent or update your defaults separately.

6. Testing before you use

Each agent card has an expandable Test area with sample input tailored to its stage. Edit the input, click Run Test, and the agent will produce live output using its current instructions and model.

Testing is a real generation — it consumes credits at the selected model’s rate, just like a normal story step. You will see a clear warning before running it, and the result (or error) appears right below the button.

Use testing to iterate quickly on wording before committing the agent to a full story.

7. Reselling agents and earning credits

If you craft an agent that other creators love, you can publish it and earn credits every time someone buys it. This is the main way to grow your balance beyond buying credits.

Publish to the marketplace

  1. Open Agents → My Agents and click Create Agent or Edit.
  2. Turn on Resell on Marketplace and set a Price in credits (minimum 50). Add a clear name and description so buyers understand the style and strengths.
  3. Save. Your agent now appears in Marketplace for everyone except you. Toggle the switch off at any time to delist it.

Private agents (switch off) stay in My Agents only and can still be used as your defaults — they just are not for sale.

Buying an agent

In Marketplace, each card shows stage, description, rating and price. Click Buy — if your balance covers the price and your email is verified, the agent is added to your usable collection immediately and the price is deducted from your credits.

After purchase the agent appears alongside your own agents in Settings and in New Idea → Custom AI Agents. You can select it as a default or per-idea override. You use its behavior — the underlying instructions remain private to the seller.

Event What happens Credits
Buyer paysFull price deducted from buyer’s balance− price
Seller earns95% of price credited to seller’s balance instantly+ 95%
Platform fee5% retained to fund free startup credits and operations5% fee

Where earnings appear: credited directly to your balance — the same balance shown in the top navigation and on the Dashboard. There is no separate wallet or withdrawal step; earned credits are spent just like purchased ones. Your total earnings are tracked on your profile.

  • Price is editable. Change it via Edit at any time — the new price applies to future purchases; existing buyers keep their copy.
  • Value comes from specialization. Agents tuned for a genre, tone or structure (for example, cozy mystery dialogue, hard sci-fi worldbuilding, or fast-paced thriller beats) tend to sell best. A clear description helps.
  • Minimum 50 credits keeps the marketplace focused on meaningful work.

8. Ratings and trust

Buyers who have purchased an agent can rate it from 1 to 5 stars. Ratings are shown on marketplace cards and inside the agent’s details, helping future buyers judge quality.

  • Only verified purchasers can rate; sellers cannot rate their own agents.
  • After you use a purchased agent in a few story generations, you will be prompted to leave a rating — a small nudge to help the community, not a requirement.
  • High-rated agents get more visibility and sales; thoughtful instructions and a well-matched model are what earn those stars.

9. Tips and FAQ

Practical tips

  • Start from the built-in, then specialize. Clone the built-in Concept Architect, add one or two constraints for your genre, test, and iterate.
  • Use Settings for your signature voice, overrides for experiments. Keep your favorite Scriptwriter as the global default and swap in a new one per idea when you want to try a different tone.
  • Draft cheap, polish strong. Generate the first version with lighter models to check structure, then swap to a stronger model for the final run.
  • Write descriptions for buyers, not just yourself. “Witty banter, short scenes, YA voice” sells better than “My custom scriptwriter v3.”

FAQ

Do I need custom agents to generate a story?

No. Leave all stages at Default (built-in) and the pipeline works out of the box. Custom agents are optional upgrades for control and style.

If I change my default agents in Settings, do existing ideas update?

Ideas remember only the stages you explicitly overrode. Untouched stages always follow your current Settings, so changing defaults affects future generations of those ideas. Overridden stages stay pinned until you change them.

Buyers see my prompt?

Never. The marketplace shows name, description, stage, model, price and ratings. Instructions stay private.

What does testing cost?

One model call at that agent’s model rate — the same billing as a normal generation step. See Credits and Consumption for how text costs are calculated.

Can I refund a purchased agent?

If eligible, refunds are issued as credits back to your balance, not as cash. Check the Agents page for the refund option or contact support@scriptframe.studio.
